Anointing of the Sick
“By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them” (Lumen Gentium, XI). At St. Matthew Church we celebrate the Sacrament of the Sick in a communal setting each year during the late spring-time, a time of hope and new life. For those who are struggling with physical, emotional or mental illness, the Spring is an opportune time to reach out to the Lord for strength and healing. The date and time of the celebration will be announced at the start of the Easter season.
Members of the Church of St. Matthew who are in need of the sacrament of the anointing of the sick should call 718-774-6747 to make arrangements for a priest to come to you at home or in the hospital.
By virtue of our Baptism, we are all called by God for some work in the world to continue Jesus’ mission to build God’s kingdom. Some of us are also called to minister within the Church itself to help the rest of the community to worship God and to support them in their work in the world. To hear God’s call to this kind of vocation is not always easy and we are here to help you discern you call as best we can.
If you would like to talk to someone about a vocation to the priesthood, religious life, or even as a lay ecclesial minister, please contact the Rectory at 718-774-6747.
